Washburn completes four-game sweep over Concordia-St Paul with an 18-12 win

Washburn baseball scored 14 runs in four innings to finish off a four-game sweep of Concordia-St. Paul on Monday with an 18-12 victory. The Ichabods will begin conference play this weekend at Fort Hays State.

The Ichabods (6-7) got on the board in a hurry in the bottom of the first. Trey Adams reached base on a dropped third strike and then Easton Bruce cleared the bases with a home run down the right field line. Up next was Cale Savage, who singled to center field and then scored on a triple by Ike Book. With two outs, Otto Jones reached on a fielding error by the short stop that allowed Book to make it home and push the Ichabod lead to 4-0.

Washburn starter Charlie Kiefer got out of a jam in the second inning when Concordia-St. Paul (0-4) had runners on second and third with one out and Kiefer ended the inning with back-to-back-strikeouts.

The Golden Bears broke through in the third inning and scored four runs with two outs. A bases loaded hit by pitch brought in a run and then three scored on a triple to left center to knot up the score.

Concordia-St. Paul took its first lead of the afternoon in the following inning and scored two runs on two hits to go up, 6-4.

The Golden Bears' lead was short-lived as Andrew Schmidtlein hit a leadoff double and then moved up to third on a wild pitch Cal Watkins brought in the run with a sacrifice fly to pull within one. Bruce landed a two-out single to right field and with one swing, Savage hit a bomb over the fence in center field to reclaim the Washburn lead at 7-6. Book stepped into the box next and on an 0-2 pitch, hit a home run of his own that was just fair down the right field line.

Washburn added a trio of runs in the fifth to push the lead to 11-6. Adams collected an RBI on an infield single, Savage drove in one run with a double, and Book singled through the right side to give the Ichabods a five-run advantage.

The Ichabods added three more runs in the sixth, with two runs scoring without even swinging the bat. Connor Scott legged out a bunt single to third base and then swiped second to get into scoring position. Schmidtlein singled up the middle to bring home Scott. Watkins singled and Adams drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. Savage worked a six pitch walk to bring in a run and Book was hit by the pitch to bring in another run to make it 14-6.

In the home half of the seventh, Washburn poured on four more runs to go up 18-6. Jones walked, stole second, and then traded places with Scott on his double to left field. Watkins poked a single through the left side to score Scott. After a walk and a hit by pitch that loaded the bases yet again, Book dropped in a single to center that drove in a pair of runs.

A deluge of Concordia-St. Paul pinch hitters came to the plate in the eighth inning and did their job as the Golden Bears put up six runs on seven hits to trim the deficit to 18-12.

That would be the last runs scored in the combined 30-run contest as Julian Zamora tossed a scoreless ninth inning to end the game.

The Ichabods out hit the Golden Bears, 18-13, and registered three home runs, one triple, and four doubles. Seven of the nine starters had a multi-hit game. Book was a perfect 4-4 at the plate with a home run, triple, walk, two runs scored and six RBI. Savage went 3-5 with a home run, double, walk, three runs scored and drove in four runs. Watkins was also 3-5 at the dish with two RBI and scored three times. In his first start of the season, Schmidtlein was 2-4 with a walk, three runs scored, and an RBI.

Chase Torkelson earned his first win as an Ichabod as he pitched three effective innings in relief and allowed zero runs, one single, and one walk and struck out two.
