Ichabod track and field teams return to action at Washburn Rust Buster

The Washburn Ichabod men's and women's track and field teams return to action for the first time in 2023 hosting the Washburn Rust Buster at the Washburn Indoor Athletic Facility.

 

FANS ALLOWED

Fans will be allowed inside the athletic facility as spectators. Admission is $5 at the door.

 

WHO'S COMPETING

There will be a total of 50 teams competing on Saturday with 1,427 entries by 849 student-athletes making the event the third-largest in total student athletes appearing and the second-highest in total entries.

 

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE ICHABODS

Dec. 10, 2022 -- MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Washburn Ichabod men's and women's track and field team sent five squad members to the Tjeerdsma Classic at Northwest Missouri and came back with two school records, seven personal bests and three NCAA provisional marks.

Isabella Hohl finished second in the prelims in a school record time of 7.43 topping her record she set at the 2022 MIAA Championships which previously stood at 7.47. She did not run in the final of the event, but made her first appearance in the 400m and broke the school record in that event in a time of 56.57 finishing fourth overall. The previous school record was 56.73. Both event times were NCAA provisional marks.

Ashley Heavner finished 12th overall in the 60m hurdles with a personal best of 9.42 topping her time from last week at the Ichabod Alumni Invitational of 9.59. Heavner also competed in the 400m and finished sixth overall in a time of 1:00.21 also topping her time from last week of 1:01.44.

Adriel Holloway made her collegiate debut with a fifth-place finish in the weight throw with a mark of 14.62m (47-11.75) and Dakota Bottom finished 14th with a mark of 10.82m (35-06.00) topping her throw from last week of 10.53m (35-06.75).

On the men's side, Alessandro Di Gregorio finished third in the high jump clearing a personal best and NCAA provisional mark of 2.06m (6-09.00) topping his mark from last week of 2.01m (6-07.00). 

 

USTFCCCA RANKINGS

The first scheduled national rankings is set to come out Jan. 24.

 

MIAA PRESEASON POLLS

Both the Ichabod men's and women's track and field teams were picked eighth by the league coaches in the preseason poll released on Dec. 1 by the MIAA office.

 

COACHING

Cameron Babb has led both the Ichabod track and field teams and cross country teams to steady improvements entering year six of the revamped programs. Between cross country and the track and field programs, Babb has coached 64 all-MIAA selections, 49 all-region picks, 33 All-Americans and 51 NCAA Championship individual qualifiers and one relay team.

UP NEXT

The Ichabods will be on the road at the Pittsburg State Invitational on Jan. 28. The Gorillas will host the 2023 MIAA Indoor Championships. The Ichabods will be back in action in Topeka at the two-day Washburn Open starting Feb. 3.
