Smagina named MIAA Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week

For the second time this season Washburn’s Sonia Smagina has been named the MIAA Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week. Smagina, ranked No. 2 nationally in singles, went 4-0 last week leading the No. 19 Ichabods to wins over Fort Hays State and No. 22 Nebraska-Kearney. 

All four of Smagina’s wins came at the No. 1 spot. Against the Tigers her and Maja Jung defeated Irina Alfonso and Maria Paz Diaz 6-2 in doubles and in singles she won 6-2, 6-1 over Alfonso. Against the Lopers her and Jung won 6-3 over Jazmin Zamorano and Melisa Becerra and Smagina won 6-4, 6-2 over Becerra on the road.
