Topeka, Kan. – Governor Kelly has appointed Angel Romero to the Washburn University Board of Regents, the appointment was effective this August.
Romero serves as the vice president for resource development at United Way of Greater Topeka. In his role, he oversees all United Way fundraising activities, including workplace campaigns, major giving, planned gifts and grants. Prior to joining the United Way, he worked in data collection for the Kansas Board of Regents.
Romero moved to Topeka in 2006 to attend Washburn University. He graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts in political science and went on to graduate from the Washburn School of Law in 2013 with a juris doctorate, making him a proud double-Ichabod alumnus. He serves on various community boards, including Capital Area Crime Stoppers and the Jayhawk Area Council-Boy Scouts of America. In addition, he serves on the board for the Kansas Association for Youth (KAY) Alumni Network and spends one week each summer mentoring high school students at KAY Leadership Camp. He is a 2010 graduate of Leadership Greater Topeka, a 2011 20-Under-40 honoree and a member of the 2022 class of Leadership Kansas.
The Washburn University Board of Regents is comprised of nine members.
(3) The governor appoints three members.
(1) The mayor of the city of Topeka (or a member of the city’s governing body) is a member.
(3) The mayor appoints three members – one from the 18th state senate district, one from the 19th senate district and one from the 20th senate district.
(1) The Shawnee County commission appoints a member.
(1) The Kansas Board of Regents appoints a member.
The Kansas Board of Regents’ appointee serves a one-year term; all other members serve staggered four-year terms.
The next Washburn University Board of Regents meeting is scheduled for Sept. 15 at 4 p.m. in the Kansas Room in the Memorial Union on the Washburn University campus.
